Three Things Catholics Can Learn from Evangelical Christians

    Jun
    18

Although we claim as Catholics to possess the fullness of the truth, we cannot deny the fact that there is truth to be found in other religions and even in non-Catholic Christianity. This is the first of a series of posts in which I plan to explore the things we can learn from stepping outside of the sanctuary to find three things Catholics can learn from Evangelical Christians. How Jesus Turned the World Upside-Down

    Jun
    17

Jesus was as counter-cultural as they come. He didn't conform to the status quo. He didn't align Himself comfortably with the religious communities of His time. He turned the world on it's head, challenging us to do the same. [ Continue Reading ]

The Evangelizer’s Toolbox: Laudate Catholic App

    Jun
    13

Being a Catholic these days can be difficult at times. It is not easy to maintain an intimate relationship with God through a consistent prayer life with all the noise and distractions. The technological advances of our times often keep us busy with things that don't really matter. However, when technology is used for good it can become an aid to us, helping us to continue our journey toward our heavenly reward. So I have decided to share some of the tools that I use in my personal spiritual life in the hopes that they might benefit you as they have me. And today I want to recommend the #1 free Catholic app, Laudate. [ Continue Reading ]

Praying to Mary: Why the Church Needs a Mother

    Jun
    12

One of the biggest contraversies between Catholics and other Christians seems to be the role of Mary as our mother. Some would submit that honoring or venerating her is a usurpation of the worship given to Christ alone. Others might say that praying to the Blessed Virgin Mary is unnecessary because we can just go straight to Christ. Both of these are true when taken to the extreme, but in honoring our mother and asking for her prayers, we don't eliminate Christ or lessen His importance. Her desire was, is, and always remains for us to "do whatever he tells you". [ Continue Reading ]

How Suffering Brings Us Closer to God

    Jun
    10

The world looks at suffering in a negative light, as misfortune. But as Christians we should be able to see the bright side of suffering and how its purpose is to purify our souls and bring us back to God if we've strayed or closer to Him otherwise. [ Continue Reading ]

Theology: Falling in Love with God

    Jun
    6

Do you remember the first time you fell in love? No doubt there were feelings of happiness and joy. Nothing else in the world seemed to matter. You probably spent hours talking to each other, getting to know each other. I would like to propose to you that theology—the study of God—is not just a scientific, academic study of God, but a falling in love with God. [ Continue Reading ]

The Necessity of Relationships and Personal Invitation in Evangelization

    Jun
    5

It's clear that the primary mission of the Church is to evangelize. Jesus commissioned the disciples and sent them out as apostles to do just that. This continues to be our mission, but we are failing on many fronts. I would suggest that one of the reasons we are not fulfilling our mission is because we are missing the mark when it comes to personal relationships, or lack thereof, and failing to harness the power of the personal invitation. Adopted: Why Calling God Our Father is a Big Deal

    Jun
    4

The spiritual life—in fact our entire existence—is dependent on God our Creator. But He is more than just our Creator, He has revealed Himself to us as our Father. This is a significant expression about who God is and being able to call God our Father is a big deal. Let me tell you why. [ Continue Reading ]

Why Authority Should Be Challenged Every Once in a While

    Jun
    3

We are surrounded by authority figures in every aspect of our lives—at work, at school, and even in the Church—and some of us are authority figures ourselves—as parents, parish leaders, etc. This authority is given along with the responsibility of using it for the good of those being served. This is why I think it's important that we challenge authority every now and then. [ Continue Reading ]

    The Dignity of a Name

    May
    30

A few month's ago I attended an art convention in downtown LA and as I was making my way through the exhibits holding my newborn son one of the artists approached me. We talked about children mostly and he asked me what my son's name was. I told him his name was Joshua Obadiah Jones. The man with a puzzled look on his face asked quietly, "Are you Jewish?" I smiled and said no. He asked where I was from, then about my wife. Then I explained that I was Catholic and that we had named him Joshua meaning "God saves" and Obadiah meaning "servant of God" or "worshipper of God". [ Continue Reading ]
